The most important descision to be made is what type of surface are you proposing. Seems simple enough of a determination. Well you could not be further from the truth? Like always what may be impervious on your neighbors lot MAY NOT apply to you!
For the most part items like: driveways, sidewalks and patios are considered impervious. However, items like wood decks, swimming pools and flagstone walkways may not. This difference will greatly change the degree of your project.
So what is the big deal with impervious cover? The amount of surface will put your project into a catagory. These catagories vary but for discussions sake, lets say they are, 0 to 499 sf, 500 to 999 sf, and 1,000 to 1,499 sf. Depending on the catagory your required stormwater system will vary.
It wil vary on the type of design methodology and the contol system.
Simple Method. If you read the code, IF PUBLISHED, thie method makes analysis easy but the cost of the system can change."Volume and rate control"- This method is utilizes the Soil Conservation Service SCStr55. Which is not only used to calculate the runoff volume, but also the rate at which it flows.
This is what is classically known as a closed loop system. The inceased volume is collected and taken to a system of chambers. The simply calculation determines the required volume. This system is alittle more expensive but in tight areas. This type of system requires little maintenance and will operate for years.
So what is the intented goal of a system. The conversion of manufactured surface back to a natural surface. Controlling the differential storm volume and the rate of the runoff, is paramount. The picture on the right side shows not only uncontrolled flow with also petro- hydrocarbons flowing unabated. The materials eventually lead to a open water source.
